Not sure if Akismet is working properly on your site? This guide will help you troubleshoot the most common issues. 

If you’re troubleshooting a problem with Akismet, the first thing you should do is check to verify whether or not Akismet is actually receiving any submissions from your site. You can test this by submitting a comment or form submission with one of the following spam triggers:

  • Name: viagra-test-123
  • Email: akismet-guaranteed-spam@example.com
  • Comment Body: akismet-guaranteed-spam

The comment or form submission will be accepted normally, but you can confirm Akismet has received the submission by checking that it was automatically filtered into the Spam tab when you review the submission on your WP Admin dashboard.

If the test submission was successfully filtered as spam

If the submission was filtered as spam, this indicates that Akismet has been correctly configured and is working properly on your site. 

If you’re troubleshooting why some spam submissions are not being flagged as spam, and you’ve confirmed that Akismet is working when completing the test above, please refer to the instructions here to report missed spam, which should improve Akismet’s behavior and help it filter spam more accurately. If you still notice spam submissions slipping through the cracks after several days of reporting missed spam, feel free to contact our support team so we can help you further.

If the test submission was not successfully filtered as spam 

If the submission was not filtered as spam, this means that Akismet did not receive the submission at all. This indicates that Akismet has not been correctly configured on your site. Keep reading in order to learn how to troubleshoot this further.

Check to make sure that your Akismet API key has been activated on your site and has not been suspended

You can access your API key on your Akismet Account Overview page. Once you have your API key, you can refer to step five of this guide to access the Akismet settings on your WP Admin dashboard and ensure your API key has been entered correctly.

Check to make sure that your contact form has been configured to use Akismet

If you’ve confirmed that your Akismet API key is present on the site, but testing with one of the automated spam triggers mentioned at the beginning of this guide still doesn’t work, it’s likely that your contact form has not been correctly configured to use Akismet.

Most form plugins require some setup in order for Akismet to be able to filter the submissions sent through that form. To check whether your form plugin offers an integration with Akismet and access the instructions to set up the integration, please refer to this page.

If the form plugin you’re using isn’t listed on that page, then it doesn’t currently offer an integration with Akismet. To include anti-spam protection on your forms, you’d either want to rebuild them with one of these other options listed, or find a different anti-spam provider that does integrate with your forms.
